"When God made Elina, He pulled moonlight from the north, starlight from the south, sunlight from the east, and candlelight from the west. He planted the four lights around the steadfast soil of her soul, and beaming with gladness, God said, Elina, pray." Every child around the globe is specially made by God with a unique set of virtues, talents, and interests. What beautiful things was God thinking when He made you?

when I first showed this to my three year old daughter she let out the biggest "WOW!" and ran across the room for a closer look at the cover. (She then insisted the child with a trumpet on the yellow D was Christopher Robin 😂)

I loved the cultural and ethnic diversity of the characters. I love that inside the cover there are children of various interests, ethnicities and abilities. (Children in wheelchairs and crutches are so rarely included in children's books!) I foresee some great conversations these details will lead to upon repeated reading. I love that although every character clearly has different strengths they are CELEBRATED, and not condemned for not fitting in a one-size-fits-all-mold. And the art is so vivid and detailed, it really draws you in.

Often faith-based children's stories are so pragmatic, and predictable. But the imagination and creativity in this book really makes it stand out, makes it a special book.

SO - if you're looking for a great new children's book to add to your little one's library I really hope you'll grab a copy of this!

I am SO pleased with this book! We have a very multi-ethnic/multi-cultural family and there are very few books that encourage kids to get to know their neighbors or to embrace the idea that God was creative and deliberate when creating each and every person in the whole world. They get a chance to step out of their comfort zones and communities and explore the world in a very whimsical and delightful way.
I like to include books in our Easter baskets each year, and this year I found one so lovely I bought it for my godchildren, too! I love a book that puts beautiful illustrations and poetic images in children's hands, and even better, this book challenges them to think poetically, too. When God Made You is a delight.

Each page introduces a new child from a different culture and with different gifts. It goes one to explain the unique recipe for each child seeds, fizzy candy, drum beats and wood. My oldest daughter loves drawing connections to metaphors, so I believe she will like thinking about how these "ingredients" work together to make each child's unique skills and strengths. The book ends by asking, "What beautiful things was God thinking when He made you?" I expect we will have silly and serious conversations about what beautiful things in our world might make each of us.

The book clearly presents God as the maker of people (and beauty!), but doesn't go much farther to explain God. This has the lovely affect of encouraging children to see God through people and our beautiful world, and leaves the door open for you to discuss your faith in the way you choose.

The illustrations initially look like fanciful watercolors, but the more you look, you can see illustrator Megan Elizabeth Gilbert included collage elements as well. The pictures are full of new things to find with each reading. The author Jane Meyer encourages children to write or draw their own page for "When God Made You," and send it to her! I think we'll have a lot of fun writing and drawing our own ideas from this book.
As a parent, I do want to teach each of my children that they were individually and wonderfully made.

This beautifully illustrated book does an excellent job for a serious believer in God or a parent who simply wants to convey their child is special in a unique way. This book is also a great way to teach diversity - the illustrations on the front and back cover, and inside front cover and inside back cover are perfect conversation starters on the topic of diversity.

To further comment on the illustrations and illustrator - I have had the privilege of meeting Megan when she was pregnant with her first daughter, and without a shadow of a doubt I can say her illustrative style is a direct extension of her belief that each child is a gift, given by God. I can just imagine her thinking of what God thought about her daughters as she worked on this book. The illustrations are sweet. They capture the text in a way that any author is lucky to have - the illustrations reinforce and elaborate on the words meaning. This adds another engaging dimension to the book for children and parents. Collage is used to great effect with the artists' hand drawn illustrations. It's such a beautiful book.

The text of the book is very whimsical. It elaborates on specific thoughts God had as each child named in the book is gifted a unique set of virtues and talents. The last few pages of the book offer a range of additional text for children to explore, including a script running the perimeter of the page which details the ethnic background of each child in the story - The Netherlands, Japan, Greece, Afghanistan, and Mexico are just a few of the nationalities represented and illustrated with lovely detail. The author clearly put great thought into each description written. Charming elements such as a cherry being part of what makes the gift God gives a Japanese child are woven throughout this book.

This book is very much a tapestry piece. It has layers to discover as you go.

On a final note - as an educator, this book has many extension possibilities. It's a great way to have a child think critically and write creatively. One idea is using the text as a writing prompt by having students/ your child describe what they think God thought as he created their unique abilities. Similarly, the book can be used as an illustrative prompt - having students illustrate what they create is a great way to ensure comprehension of a concept. Topics this book can assist in range from secular diversity through theological study of how God made us. If one has reservations about God in the text, I applaud the author for making a universal concept - diversity - something that includes the idea that one wasn't created by accident but rather by intelligent design.
Awesome poetic, diverse, colorful children's book! I love each character and how fearfully and wonderfully each person is hand-crafted- How God views us!! My son's favorite page is Mateo because we live in California and he loves building sandcastles! Beautiful book!
Lovely book about the gifts God gives each one of us & how He calls us to use those gifts. Beautiful new baby, Baptism, First Communion, or overall wonderful gift.
With this book, Jane gives us the incredible gift of helping our children see the unique beauty in themselves and others. I have bought several copies to give as gifts and continue to do so for the children of friends and family.
